SALSA & BACHATA
Two of the most popular Latin American dances in the world. Discover their unique character, history and what makes them so special.
SALSA
Energy, Passion & Improvisation
Salsa is an explosive dance full of energy and improvisation. Born in Caribbean culture and shaped in the streets of New York, salsa combines Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazzy movements. It's the perfect social dance - fast, playful and always inviting.
History
Salsa has roots in Cuban Son, but got its modern form in New York in the '60s and '70s. There, Cuban, Puerto Rican and American influences melted together into the dance we know today.
The Music
Salsa music is built around the clave - a rhythmic pattern that holds everything together. With trumpets, piano, bongos and congas, it creates an irresistible rhythm that makes you move automatically.

BACHATA
Romance, Connection & Feeling
Bachata is the dance of the heart. With slow, sensual movements and intense connection between partners, bachata tells stories of love and longing. It's more accessible than salsa, but equally addictive.
History
Bachata originated in the '60s in the Dominican Republic as 'music of bitterness' - love songs from the poor neighborhoods. Long marginalized, it grew into a worldwide sensation with millions of practitioners.
The Music
Bachata music is characterized by the distinctive guitar riffs and romantic lyrics. The 4-count rhythm with emphasis on the 4th count gives the dance its unique 'hip pop' that makes bachata so recognizable.
